What Are 5D Number Plates?
5D plates are a hybrid of 4D and 3D gel technologies. The characters are first laser-cut from acrylic (like 4D plates), then coated with a layer of polyurethane gel resin (like 3D gel plates). This produces a character with sharp, defined edges from the acrylic base and a smooth, domed, glossy top surface. The “5D” name reflects this combination of two premium manufacturing processes.
5D vs 3D Gel vs 4D – Which Should You Choose?
- 3D gel – Raised, fully domed characters with a smooth, glossy finish throughout.
- 4D – Laser-cut acrylic with flat tops and sharp, clean edges.
- 5D (gel + 4D) – Laser-cut base with gel dome on top. Sharp edges and glossy finish.

Are 5D Plates Road-Legal?
Yes. Our 5D plates meet all BS AU 145e requirements and are fully legal for road use in the UK. They are manufactured by a DVLA-registered supplier and carry the required certification markings. You will need to supply proof of entitlement and ID when ordering.
